The East Somerset Railway has released a further update on the overhaul work being completed to steam locomotive No.5239 Goliath.

The frames were re-wheeled last week (more information here), the team is at the stage where the parts that have been painted, cleaned and inspected can be bolted back into place.

5239s cylinder cladding has been fitted with fresh lagging and front sandboxes now in place. The rest of the cylinder casing sections have been shot blasted and are now being repaired before they are painted.

The coupling roads have had their bearings pressed out. However, the rods have been found to have oval holes and not the right spacing. A number of these bores are now being slightly enlarged at the correct centres.

Putting an 8-foot long rod into a milling machine with a 4-foot long bed is a bit of a challenge, but the team has managed it in-house.

Priority is now with the boiler, a number of crown stays were cut out of the weekend.
