Over 250,000 passengers for Cambridge North rail station in its first year

Greater Anglia has announced that East Anglia's newest railway station, Cambridge North, has welcomed more than 250,000 visitors during its first year of being open.

Cambridge North station opened on May 21st, 2017 and has since welcomed 320,000 people through its doors. That's equal to 6,000 people a week on average.

More recently, the station has been seeing 10,000 passengers a week using the station, which is ahead of 's growth targets.

Greater Anglia has also announced that a Costa Coffee shop is due to open at the station in the near future.

The station has three platforms with regular, direct services to Norwich, London Liverpool Street, London King's Cross. It is served by Greater Anglia and Great Northern, with more Great Northern services due to call there from next week.

Since opening, 12% of the station's energy has been created using the solar panels on the cycle park roof.

What did the officials say?

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia's Managing Director, said:

“We are very pleased Cambridge North is proving popular with passengers with more than a quarter of a million passengers using it during its first year.

“Cambridge is a growing city and a second railway station really helps. Cambridge North is perfectly situated for the science and research parks.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Costa Coffee to the station in a few weeks' time.”

  • Cambridge could be planning to have another new railway station built to the South of the city centre known as Addenbrooks or Cambridge South that will serve nearby Addenbrooks Hospital and the South Cambridge area which Greater Anglia could operate it just like they operate Cambridge North that opened last year.
