For over 175 years, the Irwell Valley has been accustomed to the sights and sounds of steam engines.
The East Lancashire Railway has helped in making sure that steam trains continue to run in this part of Lancashire along its 12 mile heritage railway.
One of the lines' most recognised features is Higher Woodhill Viaduct, which stands adjacent to the site of the former High Woodhill Mill.
The Higher Woodhill Mill viaduct underwent its last major repairs in 1932, with minor works carried out since then to ensure its ongoing safety.
Now, it is time to fully restore the viaduct to its former glory, allowing it to continue carrying heritage trains.
The cost of the work is estimated by the East Lancashire Railway to be around £1.28million.
It is hoped that grants will cover most of the costs of the restoration from the government's Department for Levelling Up Fund and Housing and Communities Fund, but in order for that to happen the railway needs to demonstrate that it has support form the local community and visitors that use and love the railway.
The railway has launched this appeal, not just to its members and volunteers, but to the tens of thousands of visitors, locals and other heritage rail enthusiasts from across the UK that support and enjoy a journey along the East Lancashire Railway.
Maintenance work is expected to start on Higher Woodhill Mill viaduct within the next 12 months. The work undertaken will ensure that future generations will also be able to experience a steam train ride over this magnificent viaduct.
As well as our trains, the track, the signals, the tunnels and bridges are all part of the immaculately preserved history that our visitors love so much. It is right that the trains get most of the attention, but in truth they're only part of the overall picture.
