ScotRail running trials of advanced ticket machine

is carrying out trials of a new type of ticket vending machine, which, if it is successful, will provide more ticket options and clearer information for customers at stations across .

The new machine, called a “Smart Kiosk, ” is much more advanced than regular ticket machines. Compared with existing machines, it provides more options for customers to plan their journeys, choose a seat preference, and purchase tickets for the day of travel.

Customers can also plan their future travel arrangements, and reap the benefit of cheaper, advanced fares, where these are available.

The Smart Kiosk has improved features, allowing customers to change the user interface at the touch of a button, to display a navigation screen that is more suitable for them.

An additional feature allows the machine to be used by two customers at once so that while one customer is accessing ticket vending and travel information on the main screen, another customer can use a screen at the side of the unit to load tickets onto their .

Live travel information

With better connectivity, the Smart Kiosk can now offer live travel information, including train times and platform numbers.

To align with the new industry standard for paper tickets now being sold by most UK train operators, the new Smart Kiosks can also print paper tickets with QR barcodes,

The trial of the Smart Kiosk is being carried out at Station. Customers are encouraged to use the machine and provide feedback that will help improve the future of ticket retailing.

Anyone using the trial kiosk will be offered the chance to win a ScotRail return ticket to anywhere in Scotland.
