Following Scotland's dramatic opening day victory against Wales in this year's Six Nations rugby competition, ScotRail has issued travel advice for anyone travelling to Scottish Gas Murrayfield to watch this Saturday's against France.
The match is on Saturday, 10 February with a 14.15 kick-off, and to help spectators travel to and from the match, ScotRail is adding more seats to trains to and from Edinburgh throughout the day, including those between Edinburgh Waverley and Fife, Perth, and the Borders Railway.
To help manage the expected large number of passengers ScotRail will operate as many services as possible between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High between 10.00 and 19.00.
Because a building next to Haymarket station is being redeveloped, there is restricted access to Haymarket station and capacity within the station has been reduced by half.
Rugby fans should plan their journeys beforehand and allow extra time for travel, particularly on their return journeys.
ScotRail will not be able to implement its normal queuing system after the game, and there will be no access to Haymarket station via the ramp at the rear of the station.
Everyone travelling from Haymarket will need to use the main entrance, which will mean there will be longer waiting times for trains.
Because of the limited space available at Haymarket station, some passengers will be redirected to Edinburgh Waverley to catch their train.
To alleviate the problem, ScotRail is asking fans to consider travelling directly to Edinburgh Waverley after the match or postpone their journey home until later in the evening.
A fast and frequent service between the stadium entrance and St Andrew Square tram stop, which is a short walk from Edinburgh Waverley, will be provided by Edinburgh Trams.
Lothian Bus services numbers 1, 3, 12, 22, 25, 26, 30, 31, and 33 also run to Edinburgh City Centre from Scottish Gas Murrayfield.
Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “ScotRail is looking forward to helping fans travel to Scottish Gas Murrayfield to watch Scotland take on France this weekend, and we'll be doing all we can to make their journey a seamless one.
“To support the event, we're adding more seats to trains to and from Edinburgh throughout the day. However, customers should plan ahead as services are expected to be busy.
“We'd also encourage customers to travel straight to Edinburgh Waverley to catch their train home after the game due to the limited access and capacity at Haymarket station.”
