Stadler sees five further Giruno trains ordered by SBB

The order supports SBB's expansion of international services to Italy and will see the high speed trains manufactured in Switzerland at Stadlers Bussnang plant

(Swiss Federal Railways), has placed an order with for a further five high-speed trains to support its expansion of international services heading to .

This latest order follows the original order of 29 of the impressive Giruno trains in 2014, which were delivered by 2021. These trains currently operate between Basel and Zurich to Lugano and before travelling onwards to , Bologna and Venice.

2022 also saw a further seven Giruno trains ordered which are expected to be delivered this year and will operate between Switzerland and Germany via Basel from 2026.

The Giruno train is Stadler's SMILE high-speed train which is made up of an eleven-car electric multi-system multiple unit and is 202 metres in length with a top operating speed of 250km/ph and when working in double traction can provide an amazing 810 seats for passengers.

The impressive vehicles also mark a first in being Stadler's first high-speed train created to be fully accessible to support the Disability Discrimination Act, which it is fully compliant with. The trains feature an innovative low-floor entrance which supports varying platform heights for the different countries they call at. The trains also offer incredible comfort alongside many welcome customer benefits, such as:

  • Excellent mobile phone reception
  • Wi-Fi
  • Power Sockets at every seat
  • Large luggage racks
  • LED lighting

Over recent years, has seen a positive growth in the demand for rail travel and has inspired a collaboration between and SBB to create improved international travel by expanding routes further, especially with regard to the Gotthard line.

The manufacture of the 5 new trains will take place in Switzerland at Stadlers Bussnang site, with completion set for the end of 2025.
