Passengers using station have been reminded by that from the 4th of March, 129 of its parking spaces will be temporarily out of use in order to support the construction of the new station building.

During the 16-month project, which is expected to complete in June 2025, the parking spaces will be used to safely house the site compound, which features welfare and office facilities for team members alongside providing space for plant machinery and materials used.

The new station building marks a major part of the East Kilbride enhancement project, which comes via the £139.8m investment by the Scottish Government's ongoing aim to decarbonise 's Railway.

So far, significant progress has been made on the project, including the clearing of groundworks which have allowed the installation of a new access road to the newly created site compound supporting work on the new station building and platforms.

Over the Christmas and New Year period, three bridge demolitions were carried out to create the correct height clearance for new overhead electrification equipment for two bridges. The third demolition involved the footbridge, which is located next to the current Hairmyres station and is set to re-open early next month alongside the bridge at Thornton Road.

Once complete, the new station building will offer a modern and accessible facility for passengers with enhanced features such as a new booking office, waiting areas and a small retail unit. The station will also see its current platform extended by 51m in order to support longer trains.

December 2025 will see electric train services introduced to the East Kilbride line and will bring cleaner, greener and improved travel, offering greater flexibility in services across the route.

Since boots hit the ground towards the end of last year, we've made great progress on the East Kilbride enhancement project.

“We appreciate that in delivering this vital engineering work to electrify the East Kilbride to Glasgow line, we rely on the patience of the communities along the railway corridor and are grateful for this.

“We know that using part of the East Kilbride station car park, although temporary, will be an inconvenience to commuters and we thank them for their understanding.

“As the works at the station progress, we will continuously monitor our programme to see if there is any possibility that we can hand back spaces when safe to do so and in advance of June 2025.”
