The work at Northfields is to replace outdated track components, including points, to enable the introduction of new Piccadilly line trains next year.

These are part of a £2.9bn investment to modernise the line with 94 new trains being introduced from 2025 onwards to help run more reliable services safely, inclusively and sustainably.

The new trains have been designed with walk-through carriages, air-conditioning, and wider all-double doorways so that customers can get on and off more easily, and an increase of 10 per cent in passenger.

They feature enhanced digital customer information display screens, CCTV cameras for security, and, for the first time on a deep tube train, air conditioning, and will also improve energy efficiency and .
Work to replace points would normally take place overnight during engineering hours, but the ones at Northfields are located underneath a bridge, meaning they cannot be replaced quickly.

Richard Jones, Director of Asset Performance Delivery for TfL, said: “We thank customers in advance for their patience during this vital closure of the Piccadilly line. The track at Northfields has to be replaced and doing so will make journeys smoother and more reliable, as well as enable us to deliver as much of the improvements made by the upgrade to the Piccadilly line as possible.

“The Elizabeth line will help customers reach Heathrow Airport during this closure but we will also be operating rail replacement buses in and the surrounding areas. Customers should check before they travel and leave more time for their journeys during this work.”
