Alstom to supply 16 electric locos in Romania

has signed a contract with the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) to deliver sixteen 3 MS electric locomotives and provide twenty years of maintenance services.

The contract is worth around 150 million euros in total, and extends Alstom's existing collaboration within the rolling stock sector.

The contract includes an option to extend the maintenance and repair period by a further twenty years with an additional agreement.

The Traxx locomotives have four axles and can haul up to sixteen passenger carriages.

They will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h and will be will be equipped with the onboard European Rail Traffic Management System (), which uses digital technology to optimise efficiency, safety, security and interoperability.

By commissioning the locos, ARF aims to improve mobility within and between the 's major cities.

The locomotives have a flexible design, which is based on a robust, modular platform approach. It is compatible with single or multi-country freight and passenger transport, and will be available in AC, DC and multi-system configurations.

Alstom is confident that it will deliver increased operational performance and reliability with higher energy efficiency and extended maintenance intervals to improve its availability.

Traxx locomotives have been authorised to operate in twenty countries, covering a distance of more than three hundred million kilometres per year. Alstom has sold more than 2,700 units sold since the year 2000.

Alstom has been active in Romania for almost three decades, and considers itself to be a market leader in railway electrification and signalling.

The company implemented signalling and electrification systems on the Rhine-Danube railway corridor, and in the Cluj area, where Alstom is also part of the consortium building the country's second metro system, in the city of Cluj Napoca.

Alstom is installing Romania's first communications-based train control (CBTC) urban signalling system in the country on 's metro Line 5. The company has maintained the Bucharest metro fleet for nearly twenty years, and two years ago signed a contract extending this for a further fifteen years.
