The Great Central Railway has announced that it is cancelled its 1940s weekend for 2024.
The event was due to take place between the 31st of May and 2nd June 2024 but will now not take pace following the decision to consult with staff over a voluntary redundancy programme.
Additionally, the Great Central Railway says that the re-enactors that can be found at the event are set to be out of the country, attending events in Normandy. The railway also says that the field next to Quorn and Woodhouse station will be unavailable this year.
However, the GCR says that it plans a new event in 2025 that will pay tribute to the railways in the 1940s and will replace the event in 2024 with a family event between the 29th May and 2nd June including the return of trains to the Mountsorrel Branch.
Additionally, the railway says on the 1st June, they will be running an overnight gala of passenger and goods trains to recreate the experience of railways at night.
Malcolm Holmes, General Manager of the railway said, “We know this will be a disappointing decision because the event is visited by thousands of people every year. However, it costs a significant amount of money to stage and while the railway moves through staffing and financial changes we feel this is the most prudent thing to do.”
