is reminding parents that they have until this Friday (12 January) to access a discount of up to 75% on the cost of their child's spring term commute to school.

Northern ran a similar scheme for school students last term.

The operator is working with more than 185 secondary schools and university technical colleges to offer the discount through its Under 16 Education Season Ticket scheme. Last month, Northern urged parents to buy the tickets in order to avoid the risk of their kids being given a Penalty Fare.

Students who hold tickets bought via the scheme can take unlimited journeys between any two stations on the Northern network on any day, meaning that they can use the ticket at weekends and during the school holidays as well as on school days.

More information, including details of how to apply, are available here.

Last year, Northern released a heatmap highlighting which counties across the North of have the most students commuting by rail.

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: “We have a long-running campaign to encourage students to switch their commute from road to rail – and what better incentive than to lock-in a price now worth up to 75%-off the cost they would otherwise pay on journeys for the rest of the spring term.”
