Northern to introduce its new timetable this Sunday the 10th of December

The change follows a week of industrial action by ASLEF which will see Northern unable to run any services on Friday the 8th Dec

has revealed that it will introduce its new timetable as part of train timetable changes across the North of England and the rest of the Network Rail network, on Sunday the 10th of December.

The new timetable comes into effect following a week of industrial action by the drivers' union , which will see Northern unable to run any train services on Friday the 8th of December.

An agreement between union RMT and rail operators in England was reached last week, however, this was for a further dispute and is not related to the current disruption taking place across the country this week.

The timetable changes will see the majority of Northern's services unchanged. However, some services will be slightly re-timed, including:

In the North East:

  • A further two-hourly service will be introduced between and Newcastle, however, these will not call at until platform works are completed.

In the North West:

  • An increase or decrease in the number of carriages will be made in order to reflect customer demand including:
  • Off-peak trains between Piccadilly and Buxton will operate with two carriages instead of four
  • Quieter services between and North will operate with four carriages instead of six
  • will see some trains to Wigan operating with three carriages instead of four,
  • Peak-time trains to Manchester Airport via will see an increase in capacity, with services operating four carriages instead of three

In :

  • Off-peak services between and will operate with three carriages instead of four, this will free up carriages to boost capacity on morning peak-time services from .
  • The Knottingley to Leeds via Streethouse service will now feature extra carriages alongside a further stop at
  • Some services between and Ilkley, and Leeds will run with three carriages instead of four.
  • The 17:51 service between and will be removed from the timetable
  • The Leeds to service will see fewer carriages which reflects lower customer demand during winter.

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer for Northern, said:

“Whilst the overwhelming majority of our services remain ‘as is' from Sunday – customers should double check any regular journeys they make – especially those with short connections.”

“We're very conscious that this timetable change immediately follows a period of significant caused by the ASLEF action this week.”

“We want to make sure our customers are aware of the upcoming change and would encourage people to use the ‘Check My Timetable' guide on the website.”
