Anyone passing through one of Scotland's busiest stations this month is being asked to come to the aid of vulnerable families.
Passengers and staff at Glasgow Central will be encouraged to support efforts by Glasgow Care Foundation (GCF) to raise money which will provide families living in poverty with supermarket vouchers. As part of an annual effort by GCF, people in need will be able to buy food for Christmas dinner, as well as essential household goods. They could even buy a toy from Santa.
The hope it that this could be the biggest year yet for GCF, as it is marking the 150th anniversary since its foundation. It is central to a number of key local projects which help put the magic into Christmas.
GCF volunteers will have a stall on the main concourse at the station on Tuesday 5 and Thursday 14 December. They will be appealing to anyone working at the station or people travelling through to bring along supermarket gift vouchers. Alternatively, people who wish to give can make a cash donation which will then be distributed to those in need.
Ashleigh Wilson, of Glasgow Care Foundation, said: “We're one of Scotland's oldest charities. For the last 150 years, we've been a small charity doing big things for Glasgow, helping vulnerable Glaswegians when they cannot help themselves. Our main goal is to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life in the city by offering practical assistance that will empower and enrich vulnerable lives.
“But we cannot do it alone. We rely solely on the generosity of donors to help us and 100% of the money donated to Glasgow Care Foundation goes straight to those in need, meaning every single penny makes a difference. So be a hero this Christmas and give a little to help a lot!”
Drew Burns, Glasgow Central's Station Manager, added: “We're delighted to be supporting Glasgow Care Foundation's voucher drive this year. We know the last few years have been a uniquely challenging time for everyone in our communities, particularly for those who already facing difficult circumstances.
“Glasgow Central's passengers and staff are known for their generosity and community spirit and we're sure they'll be quick to respond to this appeal. Even a small donation will be gratefully received and well used supporting people across our community.”
