A mural commissioned by TransPennine Express (TPE) has been completed to mark the 175th anniversary of the opening of Hull Paragon Station.
The mural was created by Hull-based artist Andy Pea, with support from students at Ron Dearing UTC and additional suggestions from the travelling public and local residents.
The artwork – entitled ‘The Creation of Hull' – showcases different periods in the city's history, illustrating the rich heritage the area is renowned for. Visitors to the Ferensway entrance to the station are greeted by the mural, where it covers the four walls and ceiling. The project has also preserved the existing memorial boards and blended them with the new design.
The Creation of Hull divides the history of Hull into 5 chapters, each one with its own separate wall. The chapters are:
- East Wall: A tribute to Hull's enduring connection with the sea
- South Wall: A picture of the Humber Bridge and the estuary illustrates the relationship between commerce and natural world
- West Wall: A tribute to Paragon Station and its long-standing role as a vibrant hub of human activity
- North Wall: Displays Hull's proud legacy of innovation
- Ceiling: A reinterpretation of Michaelangelo's ‘The Creation of Adam' designed to reflect the overarching theme of Hull's own creation
Speaking about the mural, Mr Pea said: “I'm so proud to be a part of these historic celebrations with TPE and I'm delighted to unveil the finished mural to the people of Hull. The ‘Creation of Hull' artwork aims to enrich the urban landscape, proving that when a community comes together to create, the city flourishes as a canvas for collective expression.”
The mural is part of a wider celebration of Hull Paragon Station taking place throughout this week. The railway has long played a major part in connecting the area to the rest of the UK, with the station undergoing many transformations over the years. In 1847, a new station was built to increase capacity, while in the 20th century a neoclassical facade, bomb damage during World War II and diesel trains reflected world events and changing patterns of usage.
Today, Hull Paragon Interchange connects passengers to the city as well as local bus services and taxis.
The Managing Director of TPE – which serves routes connecting destinations in the North of England and Scotland – Chris Jackson, said: “To see the completed mural in the entrance to the station is fantastic, it's a true masterpiece and we're extremely proud to be adding to the rich history of Hull Paragon Interchange.
“Our work won't stop there though as we are continuing to invest in Hull Paragon Station as part of our blueprint to make journeys better. Replacement benches, new trees for the main concourse areas, permanent Christmas tree and lights and a new digital screen for the Safer Hull Paragon Hub are all planned for the station.
“In addition, looking beyond 2024, we will be progressing the installation of a second wide gate to the gateline and implementing toilet refurbishment works.”
The Service Delivery Director at Hull Trains, Louise Mendham, said: “We're delighted to support TPE with the 175th anniversary of Hull Paragon Station. The station is so iconic to all of us here at Hull Trains, so much so our trains were proudly named Hull “Paragon” Fleet. This mural has transformed the entrance of the interchange and perfectly captures the essence and history of Hull. It's a real masterpiece and the perfect way to mark an incredible anniversary for the station.”
