Huddersfield Station, which celebrated its 175th anniversary last year, is set to see work get underway at the end of November as part of the multi-billion pound Transpennine Route Upgrade. The programme of work will see a revamp of the station, modernising it and creating improved accessibility for customers. This work also supports a wider long-term transformational aim for the station, which will include:
- New layout
- Longer platforms
- New footbridge
- Refurbished roof structure
- Restored lantern
The programme of work will be considerate to the impressive Grade I listed station and will see its rich heritage preserved and will involve the careful dismantling and removal of the waiting room and toilet area, which was formerly known as the old team room. Once dismantled, the waiting room will be taken off-site to be carefully stored and will later be reinstated as part of the new layout for platforms 3 and 4.
Whilst the work is underway and the waiting room is not available for use, a temporary toilet block which will feature a fully accessible toilet with baby changing facilities will be available at the Manchester end of platform 4.
The restoration of the station's large-scale trainshed roof marks just one of a few examples of ‘Euston Roof', which remains in operational railways to date. This work will begin during the early part of January and will see scaffold towers put in place on platforms 1 and 4 in order to allow engineers to undertake grit blasting, painting and re-roofing. Whilst the work on the roof is ongoing, the long-stay car park will be closed to support the installation of a site compound.
