South Western Railway is continuing its work with Missing People, which is the only charity in the UK specialising in bringing missing children and adults back together again.
The partnership has seen the creation of a new campaign called ‘Safe Way Home' which aims to encourage anyone thinking of going missing or who is already missing, to use the Missing People helpline
The campaign sees posters displayed on South Western Railways network throughout October and coincides with announcements across the rail operator's busiest stations, directing anyone in crisis to call or text 116 000 to receive free, confidential and non-judgemental support.
Every 90 seconds in the UK sees somebody go missing and for the period 2021 to 2022, seeing approximately 170,000 people reported missing, of which almost 70,000 were children. It is thought that the actual figure for missing people during that period is probably higher, as not all missing people are reported.
A strong link between transport and missing people exists, with trains offering a way to travel and stations providing a safe haven, shelter and facilities such as Wi-Fi. Recent research by Missing People has revealed that 4 in 10 missing adults tried to take their own life whilst missing.
South Western Railway and its partners are committed to taking an active role in safeguarding vulnerable adults and children on its network. Last year saw SWR become the second operator in the country to achieve the British Transport Police's Safeguarding in Rail accreditation.
