is working with charity Bury2Gether which supports parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The collaboration has seen the creation of the heritage railway's first-ever SEND-friendly Santa train, which will provide:

  • Calm carriages
  • Easier access
  • More flexible arrival window

The SEND-friendly Santa train will run on Saturday the 25th of November and will provide a quiet experience for guests with music volume reduced and no flashing lights amongst other SEND-friendly features.

On board the steam-hauled train, families can enjoy the delightful views of Irwell Valley on the 80-minute round trip from Bury to Rawtenstall Station.

The SEND-friendly service will provide chaperoned outdoor access alongside a wider window for arrival, so no need to rush. The special service will also see one carer from each group travel free.

Santa and his friendly elves will be visiting the carriages, giving out gifts to the children, as well as stopping for a photograph.

For the grownups, delicious mince pies and a festive tipple or soft drink will be available, whilst children can enjoy chocolate and an activity pack.

Claire Harrison, Community Engagement Volunteer at Bury2Gether, said:

“We are very pleased to work in partnership with the ELR on this exciting initiative.”

“Many people with special needs often are unable to experience and enjoy events such as Santa Specials.”

“The ELR is to be congratulated for tailoring this event to allow people with special needs to enjoy this annual and special event.”

Mike Kelly, East Lancashire Railway chair said:

“We can't wait to welcome even more families to our magical Santa Specials with the launch of our first-ever SEND service.”

“Last year, we upgraded and made the event bigger and better than ever and this summer we've made some improvements thanks to the support of Bury2Gether.”

“The event is now more accessible and we hope to spread even more joy over the festive period to ensure a happy Christmas for everyone.”

Tickets start at £23 for adults and families who wish to commence their journey at Heywood Station, which features a free car park, can take the Santa Diesel Train Shuttle to Bury Bolton Street Station for just £2 per child and £3 for adults. Please note that tickets for the shuttle service must be booked ahead.
