Peterborough station is to receive £47.8 million of ‘levelling up' funding, which will be used to improve the station's connection to the city centre.
Documentation for the project promises to “transform Station Quarter, creating an improved gateway to Peterborough and Cambridgeshire on the East Coast Main Line.”
The area around the station entrance will be improved, including:
- a new western station entrance, making the station accessible from both sides
- the creation of a new car park, closer to the station entrance
- a better footbridge over the train lines
- new green areas with community spaces and better connections to the city centre.
Peterborough station is managed by LNER and is 76 miles along the East Coast Main Line (ECML) from London King's Cross. It is a major interchange, serving the north–south ECML, long-distance and local east–west services.
It is hoped that the improvements to Peterborough station will provide a boost for the region, including by:
- encouraging more people to travel by rail
- improving journeys
- making the city safer and easier for pedestrians
- bringing jobs and visitors to the area
I can understand making improvements but £48 for what ? I don’t suppose there will be an ADDITIONAL TICKET OFFICE on the West Side of the station if a new entrance is created ? Is this just spending cash for the sake of it because it has become available ? The fares needs to be SIMPLIFIED long before wasting cash on a scheme few might want !
£48m! You must be joking. Give me HS2, any day. Would benefit far more people.
A new bay platform 9 would be ideal for Greater Anglia trains to terminate at Peterborough coming from Norwich and Ipswich.
