South East London railway station’s accessibility improvements programme reaches major milestone

Network Rail has now finished the installation of two lift shafts which will support the south east Londons station's accessibility improvements

Plumstead station in southeast London has seen a major milestone in its £4.6m accessibility improvements programme as Network Rail completes the installation of two 16-person lift shafts marking a major step forward in the project.

The two lift shafts will eventually provide step-free access from the concourse to the platforms once the project is completed in Spring 2024.

The project will also see the installation of extra CCTV cameras, which will support increased security at the station.

The programme of work comes as part of the 's ‘' scheme, which is supporting an array of upgrades across 's Southern region in a bid to make the railway more accessible.

Hodan Hassan, Network Rail's commercial scheme sponsor, said:

“We're really pleased to see the work progressing well at Plumstead station with the successful installation of the two lift shafts.”

“I'd like to thank passengers for their patience while we continue making these important improvements and I look forward to seeing the completion of this work next spring, which will provide a fully accessible station and more comfortable journeys for all rail users.”

Martin Powell, Southeastern's station manager for Plumstead, said:

“We're always looking to improve passenger experience at our stations and the new lifts at Plumstead will, when operational, make a big difference in how accessible the station is for everyone who uses it.”
