Train services are suspended between Manningtree and Ipswich this morning after a tree falling onto the railway line.
A National Rail spokesperson said “Due to a tree having fallen onto the railway, striking a train and blocking the two lines, services are suspended between Manningtree and Ipswich.”
All lines are blocked between the two stations, with train services from London Liverpool Street to Ipswich and Norwich terminating at Colchester.
Disruption is expected until further notice
Services from Norwich to London will terminate at Ipswich and services from Ipswich to London terminating at Colchester.
Network Rail staff are on their way to remove the tree, whilst engineers work on the train.
A limited rail replacement bus service will run between Colchester, Manningtree and Ipswich.
Trees especially old ones have large root structures that can reinforce embankments and soak up ground water through osmosis.
If you remove all the large trees, you then need to pile drive and reinforce some embankments and also add new drainage mechanisms. The Victorians were genius in using trees to their advantage.
The one thing that I would like to say is, why are trees allowed to grow along side railway lines?
We all know that trees and rail lines don’t mix.
