has revealed that major engineering works will be carried out in September, which will see platforms extended at Dhu Varren and University halts. The project will support longer trains stopping at the halts in order to increase capacity and allow passengers to safely access all carriages.

In order for the work to be carried out in a safe and efficient manner, a line closure will be in operation between Coleraine and Portrush Station on the following dates:

  • Monday the 4th to Friday the 8th of September inclusive
  • Monday the 11th to Sunday the 24th of September inclusive

During these periods of work, rail replacement buses will be in operation and train ticket acceptance will be in operation for appropriate Ulsterbus services.

The rail operator is advising passengers to check their travel plans via their website or Journey Planner ahead of making a journey, leaving plenty of extra time to travel.

The usual timetable will still be in operation between Belfast and Derry~Londonderry whilst the work is underway.

Mark Montgomery, Derry~Londonderry Line Route Manager said:

“We are committed to investing, upgrading, and enhancing public transport services. It is vital to improve and modernise our infrastructure to maintain high quality, safe, and attractive rail services for everyone.”

“These works are part of a rolling programme of platform extensions across the network. They will facilitate the new walk-through six-car trains offering enhanced capacity across the network and ensure all passengers can access them safely.”

“While engineering work has already started, the main works will take place during this closure. We will also take the opportunity to carry out some routine maintenance of our track and systems in the area during this closure.”

“We are working closely with local stakeholders, including the Ulster University, and look forward to having services returned on Monday 25th September.”

“We would like to thank everyone for their support and patience as we progress these essential works”
