Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus is enabling Great North Run participants to wear their Metro and Shields Ferry tickets on their wrists.
The Run takes place on Sunday 10 September, with around sixty thousand runners expected to take part in the half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields. Nexus is encouraging them to buy their tickets in the form of wristbands.
Although Nexus provided wristband tickets last year, this year sees the introduction of an additional option of a Shields Ferry wristband, for travel on the cross-Tyne service which is a popular route on the day of the run.
The wristbands are available online and can be bought in advance. Metro ticket machines are very busy before, during and after the Great North Run, so Nexus encourages passengers to buy their wristbands online in advance.
Nexus says that it introduced the wristband tickets to save runners and spectators time and hassle, and to allow runners to not have to carry loose change or a paper ticket.
Three different wristbands are available:
- Great North Run DayRover wristband (£6), valid all day on Sunday 10 September, providing travel in all Metro zones, all local buses, the Shields Ferry and Northern Rail trains between Newcastle and Sunderland
- Great North Run Ferry Day wristband (£3.70), valid all day on the Shields Ferry on the day of the Great North Run.
- Great North Run Ferry Single wristband (£2.30), which provides a single trip on the Shields Ferry.
