Good news for beachgoers! Merseyrail is stepping up its game to provide an enhanced service on the Southport line throughout the summer season.
Starting from Sunday, May 28, a 15-minute Sunday service will be in operation to cater to the thousands of people who flock to the stunning Mersey coastline each year.
Recognising the popularity of destinations like Formby, Freshfields, Ainsdale, and Southport among families and sun-seekers, Merseyrail is ramping up its efforts to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beaches to the fullest.
The regular two-trains-an-hour service will be upgraded to an impressive four-trains-an-hour frequency, guaranteeing efficient transportation to and from these sought-after locations.
With the weather gradually brightening and summer on the horizon, there's no better way to reach the beautiful beaches along the Mersey coastline than by hopping on a Merseyrail train. Whether you're looking to build sandcastles, take a refreshing dip, or simply soak up the sun, Merseyrail has got you covered.
So, get ready to pack your beach essentials, gather your loved ones, and take advantage of the improved services provided by Merseyrail. The stunning beaches of Formby, Freshfields, Ainsdale, and Southport await, and with Merseyrail's increased frequency, you can enjoy a stress-free journey to and from the beach, ensuring a memorable and relaxing summer by the seaside.
The service will run every 15 minutes, starting from around 10:00 and continuing until the end of service, for the Southport line between Southport and Liverpool Central. However, the service between Hunts Cross and Southport will remain at two trains per hour.
On Sunday, June 4, essential engineering work will be taking place between Hillside and Southport. As a result, rail replacement buses will be available to transport passengers between Hillside station and Southport station. These buses will also make a stop at Birkdale station, ensuring that passengers can still reach their desired destinations.
To ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey, passengers are advised to check their travel times using the journey planner available on Merseyrail's website. By using this handy tool, passengers can stay informed about any potential disruptions or changes to their planned travel routes, ensuring that they can make necessary adjustments and reach their destinations with ease.

Merseyrail can still introduce the Class 777s on other routes with the Class 507 and Class 508 to be sent for scrap. And maybe 1 Class 507 or Class 508 unit to be retained and preserved.
