Northern will see its summer timetable come into effect from Sunday the 21st of May and will see a small number of changes for specific lines including:
Timetable changes for the North West:
- In order to support increased capacity on the Calder Valley due to ongoing engineering work for the TransPennine Route Upgrade, a new hourly service has been introduced between Leeds and Chester, calling at Manchester Victoria on Sundays.
- The ‘Dales Rail' service, which runs from Blackpool North to Carlisle, will not operate this summer however, work is currently underway on proposals to see the service return in 2024.
Timetable changes for the North East:
- Hartlepool station is currently undergoing work to finalise a new platform infrastructure and once this is complete, Northern will introduce a further service operating between Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
- The early morning service, which operates between Middlesbrough and Whitby, will be removed from the timetable, which will support extra capacity on the 10.19 service, which is much busier.
Timetable changes for Yorkshire:
- A new weekday return service operating between Sheffield and Cleethorpes will be added to the timetable.
- Services from Ilkley and Skipton to Bradford Forster Square will maintain its twice hourly service during peak time but will see the service cut to one during off-peak times because of reduced customer demand.
- Sheffield to Gainsborough Lea Road will see services unchanged. However, no mid-week services between Sheffield and Gainsborough Central will operate at peak times.

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer of Northern, said: “The new timetable coming into effect next month is part of a national timetable change process that takes place twice a year for all train operators in England. The train network is a complex system of interdependent parts and it is vital that changes are coordinated in this way.”
“For the vast majority of our customers, there is no change, but some will notice a slight re-timing of service, as such, I would advise all customers to check the timetable for any travel plans after 21 May.”
“There are a very small number of services that have been removed from the timetable which reflects customer demand and we have already communicated that information to those communities.”
