Today, LNER A4 No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley has been unveiled in its BR Blue livery after being in the paint shop.

The repaint has been completed at in Crewe.

The locomotive returned to steam in 2022 after an overhaul that was completed at the National Railway Museum in York and at Locomotive Services Group in Crewe.

When the locomotive was moved to Crewe, it was put in black undercoat to protect the loco whilst in transit, and the decision was made to keep the locomotive in LNER Wartime Black whilst run in, and subsequently, for the 2022 season.

However, when put to a members vote prior to the locomotive returning to steam, the BR Blue livery, that the locomotive had previously worn, was chosen as the livery that the locomotive would wear.

  • What a beautiful colour. It is quite striking and in great contrast to the matt black I saw it in before Christmas

  • Fantastic to see the loco back in this colour scheme it does suit it. Look forward to seeing Sir Nigel in person.

  • My Grandad built the original boilers for this class of locomotive at Doncaster and I was hoping in 2022 it was back to the original paint work, but was happy to see it working in Matt black, now it’s back in the Blue that’s going to bring the crowds to travel and admire the bygone earer. Fabulous news, she looks a million dollars. Looking forward to meet her and be proud for York and Doncater heritage. Let’s enjoy her stream line looks and full steam ahead.

  • Fine Choice – my Hornby Dublo 00 scale electric loco was just that colour – not quite as shiny though !

  • No.7 looks really good in this livery. Having grown up in BR days and remember only this experimental blue and Brunswick green, I am delighted to see one of the BR liveries chosen.
I just wonder how many people now remember LNER livery. From what I’ve seen of Garter blue elsewhere, this shade is far more attractive.

  • Whatever her colour her design is a work of art and I like the lustrous colour and shade that has been applied. Well done to all involved.

  • Great, at last, a return to colour, there are too many ‘dark’ locomotives! All we need now 4472 back in LNER Green and namestyle!

  • As much as the BR Blue is a fantastic livery, I’ve tired of seeing so many BR liveries on pre-nationalization locos. I would’ve much preferred seeing 4498 back in garter blue, staying in the wartime black, or even going apple green to show what the A4’s that were put into that scheme looked like.
In the current BR livery dominated preservation scene, a pre-nationalization livery on 4498 would’ve made it stand out from the rest of the herd.

    • Might be to do with it’s post-war speed record. 4468 Mallard is always in Garter Blue but for the same reason, it’s 1938 WSR that it set.

    • Whatever your personal preference is this is the result of a members vote and i assume you
      are not a member.

  • Oh very nice. Smart, elegant a beast ready to show off.

Great to see her back in BR Blue looks more complete.

Can wait to see her in the summer at the NYMR for the steam gala.

  • As much I liked the Black, she does look so beautiful in this Blue. Job well done by the team at LMG as the depth on that finish looks excellent from these pics. I look forward to seeing her in the flesh

  • Looks great. We’ve have got tickets. Can’t wait. My husband had the model in green, but never seen in real life. Please tell me when I can book a footplate experience
