Vital bridge replacement work in means that part of the main line will be suspended from Friday 13 January to Wednesday 18 January inclusive.

The vital work will see the Nazeing New Road bridge in Broxbourne replaced by which is replacing the bridge's central spans over a four-month road closure. The main replacement work for the railway will be completed from Friday the 13th to Wednesday the 18th of January.

During the work, no trains will operate on this section of the line over the six-day period. Rail replacement buses will be in operation for a number of routes whilst alternative travel options will be in place for other journeys. Passengers are being advised to change ahead of making their journey with Greater AngliaStansted Express or National Rail

From 2010 to 2014, remedial works were carried out on the bridge and despite this, its deterioration has continued with the bridge reaching the end of its useful life. In order to keep rail passengers, drivers and pedestrians safe and avoid ongoing closures at short notice, the bridge will be replaced.

Network Rail contractors J. Murphy and Sons will deliver the brand new bridge which has a life expectancy of 120 years.

The road which crosses the bridge is currently closed until the 30th of April in order for the work to be carried out safely, during this time, pedestrians and vehicle diversion routes are in place.

Kate Snowden, Network Rail Anglia head of communications, said: “I'm really sorry about the impact of this work on people's journeys but, if we don't do it now, it could lead to a much more disruptive closure in future. Replacing the bridge will enable us to maintain a safe and reliable route for passengers, drivers and pedestrians for years to come.”

Jamie Burles, managing director, said:

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused while our trains are unable to run under the Nazeing New Road bridge and will be doing everything we can to help customers continue their journeys during this period.”

Other engineering work on the main line will be taking place on the weekends of 21/22 January and 28/29 January, so passengers should continue to check before they travel.
