Dean Forest Railway unveil steam locomotive 9681 after overhaul

The has shared the first photos of GWR Pannier No. 9681 after its overhaul – and the loco looks fantastic!

Pannier Tank 9681 has been undergoing an overhaul for the past 9 years and now looks immaculate in its BR Black livery.

More updates during the locomotives testing are set to be published soon. But I am sure you will agree – It will be great to see 9681 back in action!

9681 is owned by The and has been at the Dean Forest Railway since 1975. The locomotive last worked in passenger steam in 2013 and has been undergoing an extensive overhaul ever since.

A Dean Forest spokesperson said “Pannier Tank No. 9681 has emerged from the works after a 9 year overhaul looking immaculate. A huge credit to the dedicated team who have worked tirelessly to bring her back to her former glory”

  • I had never thought a simple 0-6-0T could b e made to look absolutely regal, but No. 9681 deserves that compliment.

  • What a beauty! Definitely on my list for visiting in 2023 in my annual pilgrimage to regional heritage railways
