Alstom has now finished work for the infrastructure of six stations on the Haidari-Piraeus extension of Line 3 on the Athens metro network as part of the Avax-Ghella-Alstom consortium and delivered the first three stations, ready for commercial activity in July 2020.
The vast project saw Alstom design, supply and install the traction power as well as third-rail, medium voltage supply and distribution of low voltage, alongside overseeing a software update to 76 existing technical rooms for Lines 2 and 3.
The smart mobility provider also carried out the installation of its long-standing Iconis urban mobility solution of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) for the power supply which enables a high-performance flexible solution creating optimised energy control.

This Metro Line 3 extension is important as it offers passengers and tourists a seamless and faster transportation service travelling from Athens international airport to the Port of Piraeus.”
Further to the opening of three new stations, Alstom has also carried out the extension of Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) system which is also based on the Iconis platform which includes the entire network of the Attiko Metro. The Automatic Train Supervision system is not only safer and more efficient, it enables online timetable management, automatic route setting, as well as train identification, which will allow traffic control managers to know automatically the location of any train in traffic which reduces any possible risk.
With Line 3 now fully operational, passengers have improved connectivity from the Port of Piraeus and the centre of Athens as well as to major transport hubs including the Airport and Central Railway Station. The new line enables passengers to travel from the Port of Piraeus to Eleftherios Venizelos International Airpot in only 55 minutes and with 130,000 customers using the transport facility makes it as the biggest transport hub in the Attica region.
Iconis has a 30-year history when it comes to optimising urban transport performance and has been installed in over 20 countries including France, Switzerland, Italy, Canada and India. Creating a control centre solution, Iconis is made up of modules which deal with different products such as ATS, SCADA, Integrates Control and Security Centre (ICS or ICSC).
Alstom has worked in Greece for more than 40 years, overseeing the largest transport infrastructure construction projects for the country which includes Lines 2 & 3 of the Athens Metro, the Athens Suburban Railway and Metro Line 3 extension to Piraeus. Alstom is also providing 25 Citadis X05 trams for the project and has also signed a contract for the Athens Metro Line 4 which will be one of the biggest turnkey projects in Europe.
