As part of the ‘Big Lift, the Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society saw the chassis inverted and placed on a Sturgeon wagon in order for further preparation work to be carried out to allow the chassis to fit the former class EM2 bogies.

The Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society's Secretary, Andrew Hoseason, said:

“This unusual operation took place in complete safety and exactly to plan. We have a talented group of engineers working behind the scenes. They spent many hours stripping the chassis and preparing the safety plan. We are inspired to see such a big step forward go so smoothly. It's good to see progress in such an unusual and fulfilling way. Now we have created the opportunity for more challenges ahead!”

The ‘Big Lift' took place on Monday the 22nd of August after a great deal of preparation and is a vital part of the ongoing process to create the rolling chassis for the new class D16/1 number 10000. As work moves forward, parts will be manufactured to match the chassis and the bogies together, alongside new stronger springs due to the electric EM2's being lighter than the diesel D16/1 design.

The engineers who with the Society are supported by more than 200 members who kindly donate what they can every month or annually. It is thanks to these donations, creating a regular income for the Society that they are able to rent a storage and refurbishment base at Centenary Works in Wirksworth.

The construction of a new locomotive is a pricey affair and donations make a massive difference with donors able to choose specific aspects of the project to support an example of which is the recent sponsorship of the Electrical Cubicle and the buying of storage containers. Donors will also be offered an array of benefits once the locomotive is complete with anyone donating £10,000 or more getting the rare chance to experience key events such as the ‘Big Lift'.
