Harrogate man recognised for bravery at Wakefield Westgate station

Phil Jones who works as a crime reduction manager with Northern, truly practised what he preached when he stepped in to detain a man who had assaulted a train conductor on a service which was calling at Wakefield Westgate station.

The incident took place in September 2019 and due to the pandemic leading to the being suspended, has only just been formally recognised

Phil is amongst five other employees at Northern who were awarded a Certificate of Commendation at the British Transport Police Pennine Sub Divisional Awards.

Commenting on his commendation, Phil Jones said:

“I'm very honoured and humbled to be recognised by the British Transport Police.”

Other Northern colleagues also picked up commendations at the awards including:

  • Stephen McHugh, who made a life-saving intervention for a distressed female at station in September 2019
  • Damian Greenhalgh, who made a life-saving intervention at station in December 2019
  • Lorna Brown (Conductor) & David Greenslade (Driver) stepped in to break up a fight of around 20 men at in May 2021
  • Dean Worthington, who made a life-saving intervention for a distressed male at Viaduct in June 2021.
