The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is to fully investigate a signal passed at danger incident and collision between freight trains near Loversall Carr Junction in Doncaster
The accident took place on the 5th of July at 06.23, with GB Railfreight train 4E11 reporting a collision with the rear of a stationary freight train.
The collision occurred south of Doncaster on the Down Slow/Up West Slow line between Loversall Carr and Flyover West junctions.
Train 4E11 passed signal D197 whilst showing a danger (red) aspect immediately prior to the accident with the rear of the stationary train which was around 230 metres in front of the signal when the collision took place.
Travelling from Felixstowe to Masborough, train 4E11 was made up of 35 container-carrying wagons and a locomotive which hit the rear of the stationary train travelling at approximately 28mph.
Nobody was injured during the accident however a number of wagons were derailed on both trains and substantial damage was caused to both the vehicles and infrastructure.
Rail Accident Investigation Branch will investigate the accident in order to identify the order of events which led to the accident and will also consider:
- The way in which the train was driven
- Any factors which may have influenced the actions of the driver of the train
- The condition of the signalling system at the time of the incident
- Any underlying management factors.
