Network Rail has completed the refurbishment of the footbridge at Cramlington station in Northumberland on the East Coast Main Line nine miles north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Network Rail began the major £590,000 refurbishment in November last year, and it has now reopened for passengers.
During the work, the footbridge was dismantled and removed from the station to be inspected and repaired. Work took place to remove old rust and paint from the bridge, carry out repairs, and then reinstall it at the station.
Drainage on the bridge has been improved, and new handrails and stair treads installed, making it easier to use. The work will make sure that the structure remains reliable, fit for purpose, and in good condition for years to come.
Time-lapse footage taken during the refurbishment shows the bridge and staircases being lifted from the station by crane so that they could be cleaned, repaired, and painted away from the station before being reinstalled.
Sarah Reid, Route Director for Network Rail's East Coast route, said: “We're thrilled that this project is now complete, and passengers using Cramlington railway station can use the footbridge once more.
“This work will make sure that the footbridge remains fit for purpose for years to come and the new handrails and stair treads will make it easier to use. We've worked hard to minimise the impact which this project has had and we'd like to thank all those who have been impacted for their patience.”
