Network Rail will begin work during August on the upgrade project which will provide improved accessibility for passengers using the footbridge in Selby, Yorkshire.
The Grade II listed footbridge will see accessible lifts added and will also undergo strengthening work in order to create better accessibility for those with limited mobility, pushchairs or heavy luggage to travel with greater ease from the station's three platforms.
At the moment, passengers requiring assistance can only access platforms 2 and 3 by using a crossing over the tracks when station staff are available. TransPennine Express (TPE) staff members are on hand at Selby station from Monday to Saturday from 06:00 to 19:45 and Sunday from 09:15 to 19:00.
The upgrade to the footbridge at Selby railway station will provide passengers with greater independence creating better overall customer experience.
During the project, a temporary footbridge will enable passengers to access all platforms with the step-free footbridge set to be complete during April 2023 with no effect on train services.

“When the new lifts are in place, rail passengers in Selby will have the freedom to access all platforms at all times and enjoy hassle-free journeys.
“While step-free access is a must-have for the future of the railway, we also know how important it is to preserve our heritage. Strengthening the footbridge will make sure the station's iconic style is kept intact for years to come.”
The project is funding by the Department for Transports Access for All Scheme and following the receipt of listed building consent by Selby District Council, work got underway on the final design back in January.

The upgrade will be done sensitively and will incorporate the iconic footbridge. Selby station is one of the 73 stations that received funding in 2019 as part of the Access for All Programme.”
