Sellafield railway station has received a full overhaul of its car park

The Cumbrian station car park has undergone resurfacing work with an alteration to its layout to offer improved safety for both pedestrians and drivers. The changes now provide clearly marked pedestrian walkways alongside bays for vehicles.

The project has been funded by Ltd and took just two days to complete.

The improvement work is also part of a broader programme of transformation being carried out across 's rail network. The ‘A Better Way to Go' campaign focuses on work being carried out by Northern as part of their efforts to improve all aspects of customer journeys.

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern, said:

“This investment is another example of the work being done by Northern to improve the journey experience of passengers and will make a significant difference to our customers.”

“We are working hard to make sure our stations are safe, accessible and welcoming places for customers and even small changes – like resurfacing – can make a big difference.

“Our A Better Way to Go campaign demonstrates the hard work that has taken place as we continue to transform rail travel in the north and I'd like to thank everyone who has been involved.”

Mike White, head of infrastructure for Sellafield Ltd, said:

“We're pleased to support Northern in making these important improvements to the Sellafield station.

“Investment in our railway infrastructure encourages more people to use the line, improving the viability of local services and benefiting our communities and the environment.

“The resurfacing work will create a safer area for station users, including pedestrians travelling to the Sellafield site.”

The campaign will be rolled out across stations, onboard trains and online and will include improvements such as:

  • The new fleet of 101 trains
  • The refurbishment of another 240 trains
  • Industry-leading mobility scooter policy
  • The roll-out of more bodycam units for station staff
  • Improved CCTV on board and in stations
