Rugby fans making their way to Scotland’s opening Six Nations match advised to plan their journey

Scotland will be hosting England at the BT Murrayfield stadium in  on Saturday the 5th of February 2022 with a kick-off of 16:45 to a sell-out crowd.

is asking supporters to check their travel plans before setting out on their journeys. The rail operator also wants to remind customers that they are still implementing an altered timetable due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 which has seen an increased number of staff members absent or in self-isolation.

Trains running both to and from Edinburgh are anticipated to be very busy right through the day, and queuing systems are in place for key stations.

Extra seating will be added to as many services as possible between Edinburgh and , Fife, and the Borders, right through the day.

Fans making their way to the game are recommended to allow extra time for travel and also to head to the station shortly after full time as a queuing system will be in operation at .

ScotRail also wishes to remind passengers travelling on Scotlands Railway to stay safe and to stick to the Scottish Government guidelines which include the maintenance of good hand hygiene and the mandatory requirement to wear a face covering for the full journey on board trains and also whilst in stations including at enclosed and open-air platforms. Customers are also being asked to take a lateral flow test ahead of travelling.

Alcohol is prohibited to carry or consume on Scotrail services.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Head of Customer Operations, said:

“Scotland versus England is one of the biggest games in the rugby calendar, and we will be doing all we can to make things run smoothly.

“However, our temporary timetable is still in place meaning services will be much busier than normal, so I urge customers to plan ahead.

“If you are going to Murrayfield, please be patient, allow extra time for travel, and buy your return tickets to Haymarket in advance, not on the day.

“The last trains of the night will be very busy, so please aim for an earlier service to avoid disappointment.”

  • When Lumo has a full service, I suspect it will be possible to travel to the match on their early train and go back home afterwards. Will they run a pair of trains as a ten-car to maximise returns?
