has received a €100m order to supply 40 new Flexity M34 trams to of Sweden for use in Gothenburg.

Västtrafik is the agency responsible for public transport services, including buses, ferries, trains, and the Gothenburg tram network, in the county of Västra Götaland in Sweden

These latest 40 units are an option under the initial 2016 contract that enabled Västtrafik to order additional trams. Delivery to Gothenburg of the first M34 tram is expected to be by the end of 2023, with the last tram to be delivered in 2026.

The M34 trams are an extended version of the M33 trams that Alstom is currently delivering to Gothenburg, and will replace the aeging M28 and M29 models currently in use. They can accommodate 319 passengers, which is 50 percent more than the M33 model, and designed to meet the city's track and weather conditions.

Their cutting-edge technology will ensure that passengers will have a safe and stable journey, and a low-floor entrance makes boarding easy. There is plenty of space for both prams and passengers using wheelchairs, and the design meets the highest safety standards as well as Gothenburg's requirements for environmentally friendly public transport.

Alstom is manufacturing the M34 together with its partner Kiepe-Electric, who will provide all the trams' electrical parts while Alstom will supply the mechanical portion. A close collaboration between the engineers at Kiepe-Electric and Alstom has resulted in the outstanding performance of the various braking systems, which has led to both operator and passengers commenting on the trams' exceptionally comfortable ride.

Rob Whyte, CEO of Alstom Nordics, said “Alstom is very proud to deliver the new carriages to Gothenburg. The modern Flexity trams' iconic design will enhance the city's aesthetics while more comfortable interiors will improve the travel experience for the city's passengers. The trams will also help Gothenburg become more sustainable by providing an attractive transport alternative to the automobile. We would like to thank Västtrafik for their continued trust”
