The manual selective door operation (SDO) systems will be for the Transport for Wales (TfW) fleet of seven train rakes which are made up of Mark 4's (Mk4), driving van trailers and locomotives.

Currently, the fleet does not have SDO systems in place with a need for this facility, facility, which will allow them to operate in stations that have platforms that are too short to fit the complete trainset.

TfW needs to be able to operate the release of the doors on a door-by-door basis, which will provide the train crew with the ability to choose which doors to operate at specific stations.

DB ESG are currently working with TfW's fleet of seven Mk4 rakes and follows earlier contracts with both TfW and Eversholt Rail for modification work which allows the Mk4 coaching stock to be operated by Class 67 locomotives and DVT.

So far, DB ESG has updated 4 rakes and is expected to complete the full fleet of seven before Easter 2022.

Work to install the SDO systems to all 7 Mk4 rakes will start in July 2022 and is expected to complete in time for TfW's scheduled timetable change in December 2022.

Nick Goodhand, Managing Director, DB ESG said:

“We are already undertaking modification work on these Mk4 units for Transport for Wales. We are therefore familiar with this coaching stock and have developed great working relationships with the Transport for Wales team. We look forward to continuing our partnership. “
