Scotrail’s Christmas 2021 and New Year train times

has released its timetables for train services during and the New Year, and as usual train times will be different from the normal train timetable.

On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, the last trains will depart earlier than normal. Also, as with previous years, no trains will run on Christmas Day or New Year's Day. But for the first time, there will be a Boxing Day service between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

From Monday 27 December until Tuesday 4 January inclusive, a revised timetable will be in operation over Christmas and New Year.

Please remember that masks are still mandatory in stations and on trains.

Between Sunday 26 December and Friday 31 December, engineering work will be taking place in the Uddingston area, affecting routes between Glasgow Central High Level and Edinburgh via Carstairs and Shotts, Lanark, and Motherwell.

Passengers should plan their festive journey beforehand and consult ScotRail's website for last train times and changes to timetables.

Christmas Eve, Friday 24 December 2021

Services will run as normal until around 7pm, when services will begin to wind down. Refer to ScotRail's website for the time of the last train on each route.

Christmas Day, Saturday 25 December

There are no services on Christmas Day.

Boxing Day, Sunday 26 December

A revised timetable will be in place and services will only operate on the following routes:

  • Balloch to Larkhall via Singer and Motherwell via Singer and Whifflet
  • Helensburghto- Edinburgh via Yoker and Bathgate
  • Glasgow Central to Ayr, Ardrossan / Largs, Gourock / Wemyss Bay, Paisley Canal, Newton / Neilston, East Kilbride, Girvan / Stranraer, Kilmarnock/ Dumfries/ Carlisle, an Motherwell/ Lanark
  • Glasgow Queen Street to Anniesland, Cumbernauld, and Edinburgh via Falkirk High
  • Milngavie to Motherwell via Hamilton
  • Partick to Springburn

Monday 27 – Thursday 30 December 2021

Hogmanay (New Year's Eve), Friday 31 December

Trains will run to the timetable in operation from Monday 27 until Thursday 30 until around 1900, when services will begin to wind down. Refer to ScotRail's website to see the time of the last train on each route.

New Year's Day, Saturday 1 January 2022

There are no trains on New Year's Day.

Sunday 2 January

A revised service will be operating on the following routes:

  • Balloch to Larkhall via Singer, and Motherwell via Singer & WhiffletCathcart Circle
  • Edinburgh to Dunblane, North Berwick / Dunbar, Perth / Dundee, and Tweedbank
  • Fife Circle
  • Glasgow to Kilmarnock/Dumfries/Carlisle
  • Glasgow Central to Ayr, Ardrossan / Largs, , Barrhead, East Kilbride, Girvan/ Stranraer, Gourock / Wemyss Bay, Paisley Canal, and Newton / Neilston
  • Glasgow Central High Level to Edinburgh via Shotts, Motherwell / Lanark, and Edinburgh via Carstairs
  • Glasgow Queen Street to Alloa, Anniesland, and Cumbernauld
  • Edinburgh via Falkirk High, and Oban / Fort William / Mallaig
  • Glasgow Queen Street / Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness
  • Helensburgh to Edinburgh via Yoker and Bathgate Milngavie to Motherwell via Hamilton
  • Partick to Springburn
  • Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh / Wick / Thurso
  • Aberdeen to Inverness

Monday 3 – Tuesday 4 January 2022

An amended timetable is in operation on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 January 2022 on the following routes:

  • Ayrshire, Inverclyde & Stranraer
  • Dunbartonshire
  • Glasgow to Barrhead, East Kilbride, Kilmarnock & Carlisle, Maryhill/Anniesland. Neilston & Newton, and Paisley Canal
  • Glasgow to Edinburgh via Airdrie/Bathgate, via Cumbernauld & Falkirk Grahamston, via Falkirk High, and via Shotts
  • Edinburgh to Dunbar/North Berwick, and Newcraighall-Tweedbank
  • Edinburgh & Glasgow to Dundee/Arbroath/Aberdeen
  • Edinburgh & Fife
  • Edinburgh & Glasgow to Inverness, and Stirling/ Alloa/ Dunblane
  • Inverness to Inverurie/Aberdeen/Montrose
  • Lanarkshire
  • North Highlands
