A £3.1m project to improve accessibility at Croy station in North Lanarkshire is now underway!
Network Rail will be installing a brand new footbridge and lifts as part of the nine-month project to support people with impaired mobility or those travelling with children, cycles or luggage, gain easier access to the platforms.
Croy station which is on the well used Edinburgh – Glasgow (E&G) route will see passengers able to navigate their way from the entrance, over the railway, with lifts now allowing step-free access both to and from the Edinburgh bound platform.
Earlier this month preparation work for the ‘Access for All' project began with the bridge construction set to start in January 2022 subject to agreement from North Lanarkshire Council with the installation of the bridge and lifts set to be completed during August 2022.
Michael McArthur, Network Rail's project manager for the accessibility work, said: “The bridge being built at the station delivers modern standards of access for those travelling to or from Croy on a day-to-day basis and will improve the travelling experience for passengers.
“The new bridge and lifts will help everyone in the community access services at Croy station easily as part of our efforts to enable even more people to travel by train.
“Delivering step-free access at stations to open up our network is one important way in which we are improving the overall experience of travelling on Scotland's railway”.
The Access for All scheme which has funded the Croy station project sees ongoing investment intended to provide improved access to stations for those with impaired mobility. The scheme was launched in 2006 and has seen improvements made at 25 Scottish stations along with six which are set to be upgraded over the next 5 years, these stations include: Johnstone, Croy, Anniesland, Port Glasgow, Uddingston and Dumfries.
