's train presentation crews and their Active Hygiene Team represent some of the unsung heroes who kept trains in Scotland on the move during the pandemic.

Cleaning procedures were increased and enhanced throughout the COVID-19 crisis so that trains could operate safely.

The dedicated teams of workers have gone to incredible lengths to keep passengers as safe as possible from the risks of COVID-19.

Enhanced cleaning was put in place in March 2020 and has seen Train Presentation teams use:

  • 59,200 disposable mopheads, which could be likened as one for every supporter at Hampden with a few thousand to spare.
  • 42,630 litres of anti-viral cleaner, which could be the equivalent of almost 42 tonnes which is more than one and a half times heavier than the Statue of Liberty.
  • 6,588 feet of blue roll, which is more than double the height of the world's tallest building
  • 118,289 bottles of hand sanitiser.
  • 70,665 sanitising wipes.
  • 422,448 disposable face coverings.

February 2021 saw the formation of The Active Hygiene Team who have seen a massive 34,000 miles driven, proactively sanitising 5,250 train carriages with 3,250 visits made to stations which have high customer traffic or are strategically important.

Trains are sanitised with a combined cleaner and disinfectant, which can be used on all surfaces and is proved to disable many viruses in seconds. The product used is one of the world's most advanced disinfectants and keeps surfaces pathogen-free for around 28 days following application.

Train presentation crews are maintaining a heavy focus on the cleaning of frequent touchpoints such as door buttons, grab rails, tables, armrests, toilet surfaces, ticket machines, gates, handrails, lifts, payphones and door handles onboard trains and at stations.

It remains mandatory for passengers to wear face coverings whilst travelling on trains and at stations in Scotland unless medically exempt.

Mark Daly, ScotRail Acting Head of Train Presentation, said: “Although most of the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, it's important to remember that coronavirus hasn't gone away.

“But our train presentation teams are doing everything they can to make sure our customers feel as safe as possible when using a train.

“They've used a mind-boggling amount of cleaning fluid, sanitised wipes and blue roll, but it's been worth it, when we've been able to keep key workers moving across the country during the worst of the pandemic.

“We'll continue to play our part in moving Scotland forward from COVID and into a brighter future with a rail network we are all proud of.”
