(EMR) is to reinstate 22 regional services as it looks to reinstate a normal timetable following cutbacks because of the pandemic.

It will increase services in two stages; most services will be reinstated from Monday 13th December, whilst a second, slightly smaller, group of services will resume from Monday 3rd January. EMR will then operate 486 trains per day, which is 87 more than in the final pre-Covid timetable.

Liverpool to Norwich services will be increased, and there will be a resumption of services on routes between Crewe and Newark Castle, Nottingham and Worksop, and Leicester and Cleethorpes.

The aim is to prioritise those services which have had the most frequent requests from customers and stakeholders, while also protecting costs to taxpayers and ensuring the advertised timetable is robust and reliable.

Reinstating services will have a small knock-on effect on the Nottingham to Skegness route, but only during the Winter period to reflect reduced passenger demand.

The changes will remain under review. During anticipated periods of strong passenger demand, further trains will be reinstated or supplemented by strengthening existing trains. EMR intends to reintroduce these services in the May timetable.

Paul Barnfield, Operations Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “In recent months, a dedicated team has been working hard to improve the reliability and performance of our services to allow us to reinstate a number of our regional services.

“In doing so, we have aimed to prioritise services which have been the most requested by our customers and local stakeholders while also being careful to ensure our timetable is robust, reliable and as cost efficient to taxpayers as possible.

“These services will be reinstated in two stages either side of Christmas. This is an incremental and sensible approach to reinstating services at what is typically the quietest time of the year to travel. As such, I would ask customers to check their journeys between 13th December and 3rd January before setting off, by visiting www.eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk.”
