Network Rail will be undertaking both repair and strengthening work on Byram footbridge, making it fit for use throughout its years of service to come.
Engineering teams will start by putting scaffolding in place around the structure and will then carry out grit-blasting which will take off layers of paint before repairing the metalwork.
The bridge's current wooden deck will also be replaced with a brand new anti-slip surface.
To carry out the work safely will mean a temporary closure of a part of the footpath which runs over the bridge from Monday the 1st of November 2021 until Monday the 31st of January 2022.
Signposted diversions will be put in place for the local community during this time. Work on the bridge will not affect train services.
Network Rail has informed those living close by and will continue to work towards keeping disruption to a minimum.
Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail's North and East route, said:
“This work is essential to make sure people in Brotherton can continue using the footbridge and safely cross over the railway.
“We're working to minimise disruption for people in the community, but we can only complete the improvements safely when the footbridge is closed. The temporary closure until January means we can avoid multiple periods of disruption, and I'd like to apologise for any inconvenience it causes.”
