has announced its plans for the third phase of the £14.5m redevelopment of railway station

The work will cause some disruption over a short period of time for passengers, with changes being introduced to how they access platforms at the station.

The finishing touches are currently being added to a brand new lounge area which is located between platforms 2 and 3 and means that access to these platforms will now have to be taken via the newly refurbished stairwell on the current concourse area to platform 3.

Customers travelling to and from platform 2 will need to bear this in mind when planning their journey, as it may take longer than expected to move through the station. The lift from the concourse to platform 2 will remain open and offers another option to the stairwell.

As stage 3 of the concourse redevelopment gets underway, the ticket office will need to be moved to a temporary facility which is located outside of the main station building, this will allow for work to progress for the new larger concourse.

Blue badge spaces have also had to be moved to the Pollock Street car park, which is close to the GLO Centre and around 100m from the station.

Stage 3 of the project is expected to continue until Spring 2022.

North Lanarkshire Council will also make improvements to Muir Street, which is next to the station as part of the project and will include support from the Glasgow City Region City Deal. The improvements will include increased bus facilities, a new station access road, car drop off point, disabled parking and upgraded facilities for taxies and also pedestrian and cycle access. Planning has now been approved for the work to go ahead.

When the entire project is complete, benefits will include:

  • An enhanced station forecourt and building with glazed roof providing more light for the larger concourse.
  • Improvements to ticket sales facilities.
  • Enhanced retail opportunities
  • Upgraded facilities for staff.
  • Refurbished customer toilets and waiting facilities.
  • Improvements to pedestrian and cycling access.
  • Improved rail/bus interchange on Muir Street.
  • New facilities for taxis, car drop-offs and disabled parking.

John MacDonald, ScotRail Senior Project Manager, said:“Phase three of our redevelopment project will see some big changes for customers, who will soon be able enjoy the brand-new lounge area before they catch their train.

“In the meantime, access to platforms 2 and 3 will be different to what people will have become used to over the past year. Customers will now access platforms 2 and 3 using a stairwell within the station building. This is a return to the original passage through the station.

“We thank customers for their patience over the last year with the disruption caused during the Phase 2 platform level works.

“The redevelopment of Motherwell station will transform facilities for customers and open up a wealth of possibilities for Motherwell. It will create a gateway to Glasgow, and beyond; with more travel options, better connections and all in a low-carbon way.”
