The has published their latest update on the overhaul of their London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Class 5 (2-6-0) ‘Mogul' No.13268 (British Railways number 42968) at the .

Motion and Coupling Rods

Late August 2021 has focused on refitting both left-hand and right-hand radius rods to No.13268. The team started on the right-had side rod, where they noticed the radius rod only went in with a very tight fit in the expansion, too tight for operation.

Once removed, it was found the clearance in the outer die block was not sufficient.

Work is progressing on skimming the outer die block to the correct tolerance. The trial fitting of the left-hand radius rod was successful with no problems, with the rod reattached ready for service.

Handrails and Vacuum Pipe

With the team looking ahead to when the boiler cladding can be refitted, the boiler handrails have been taken out of storage for assessment. The rails themselves appear to be in good condition and can be reused, but the sockets on the boiler will need to be renewed.

New holes for the retaining pins will be drilled, with the old ones already filled in.

On the front buffer beam, the team have attached the vacuum hose for the vacuum braking system, which joins the steam heat previously attached.

The Stanier Mogul Fund is always looking for support in the form of volunteering or donations, especially with No.13268 currently undergoing an overhaul.
