Alstom has confirmed that its Coradia iLint train, the first in the world to run on hydrogen, has run for the first time in Sweden.
The train ran in Östersund, in Sweden, recently and Alstom has presented the train to stakeholders and operators to highlight the potential of the iLint trains.
Alstom wants Coradia iLint trains on non-electrified lines and would see hydrogen trains replacing diesel trains.
Alstom says that a significant portion of the rail network in Europe will remain non-electrified for the foreseeable future, with Coradia iLint trains using existing infrastructure without the need for more investment.
“The Coradia iLint trains represent a huge opportunity for Sweden to reduce CO2 emissions and even decarbonise rail transport. Thanks to hydrogen-powered public transport, regional operators can be beacons of modern mobility, as experienced recently in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria – that have tested and are implementing (or planning to implement) hydrogen trains,” says Rob Whyte, CEO Alstom Nordics.

Alstom might even manufacture Coradia hydrogen trains for England, Wales and Scotland including North of Scotland, North of England, Southern England, Southwest England, North Wales, West Wales, Mid Wales, South Wales, The Midlands, London & the Southeast, East of England and Northern Ireland.
