The Stanier Mogul Fund have published their latest update on the overhaul of their steam locomotive, London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Class 5 (2-6-0) ‘Stanier Mogul' No.13268, at the Severn Valley Railway.
Cylinders
In recent weeks, the team have focused on both of the engine's outside cylinders.
Firstly, the team refitted the left-hand cylinder's piston, using thin strips of steel to help guide the piston into position.
Next, the studs used to attach the front cylinder covers, were screwed into place. This involves cleaning each hole to ensure the studs screw in smoothly.
With the studs in, the front cylinder covers could be fitted temporarily using four bolts, which can allow the team to set up the valves correctly.
Finally, the copper drain cock pipes have been cleaned and roughly polished.
Valve Gearing
Starting with the right-hand side, the expansion link has been fitted and moves freely. A minor issue has been noticed, with the alignment between the union link and combination lever out by a quarter of an inch. To help figure out why the alignment is out, the union link has been fitted.
Smokebox
Drilling and adding countersunk holes onto the new smokebox numberplate has been completed.
The superheater head is currently being prepared for crack detection and hydraulic testing. On the smokebox, many parts are ready to be fitted, which includes the liner for the bottom of the smokebox, the top half of the steel ring which attaches the smokebox to the boiler barrel and the smokebox door liner.

I lived in Kidbrooke from 1946 to 1952 and walked to school past the old railroad station. I remember there being a high curb in front of the entrance and I used to walk in in to see how deep it was. Many a morning I arrived at school with water filled boots and wet socks, I went to Ealdham School and I always liked the walk along the long fenced in walkway that ran beside the track. It was getting dark when I walked home in the late afternoon so sometimes I ran. Is the new station in the same spot or has it been moved. I now live in San Diego and we have one train that runs between San Diego and Los Angeles, but people now all have cars so I don’t think there are many passengers. It is a shame as it run along the Pacific coast most of the way. Jean ( Campbell)
