With its move to Crewe upcoming, LNER A4 No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley has emerged from the National Railway Museum in York.
The A4 has appeared outside the workshop at York for the first time since its boiler was lifted into place back in November 2019.
Sir Nigel Gresley is currently in a temporary semi-matt black finish which will protect the locomotive as it moves to Crewe for final overhaul work.
Once this final work is complete, the locomotive will be outshopped in BR Express Blue, as this was voted in favour of by the SNGLT membership.
A provisionally agreed programme means that we should see Sir Nigel Gresley returned to steam in Spring 2022 – subject to work being completed.

The best time i had was riding on the footplate
I have just passed the Sir Nigel Gresley locomotive in black livery and displaying number 4498 parked at the roundabout on the M6 / A500 Crewe to Stoke-on-Trent. What memories from train spotting in the late 1950’s when seeing this locomotive coming through March, then the Isle of Ely, which had the largest marshalling yards and five main lines prior to Beeching and ticking it off my train numbers book. How wonderful such an iconic locomotive is being preserved!
A regular sight on the Anglo Scottish Car Carrier in the very early 60’s. A favourite among spotters at Grantham.

I have a photo of me on the footplate in around 1972 or 1973 when the loco carried the number 4498 but I can’t remember where it was.
Love the black, hate the BR blue.

I was waiting to board a London train at York on a Sunday in the 70’s and she came it to collect water. A treat.
Travelled behind SNG on NYMR back in 2000. They should stick a temporary “NE” on the tender for its trip to Crewe in black.
First day out of the engine sheds in Grosmont at Grosmont Station. Total surprise to see this iconic engine there that day in August 2015. Got some great photos of 60007 in full steam. Looking forward to seeing that again soon
I’ve only seen her once “close up” at Didcot’s Once in a Blue Moon a few years ago. Love at first sight! She’ll look beautiful in any livery (unlike Bittern who should have been repainted in green after her Mallard stint , but that’s just a personal quibble!) Sir Nigel looks glorious in the temporary black livery photo, but express blue sounds good to me. Hoping the final steps of the overhaul go smoothly.
Travelled behind Sir Nigel from Goathland to Pickering many years ago when visiting NYMR. I couldn’t believe my luck and jumped off the train at Newtondale Halt to take a couple of photos before getting back on again. Glad to hear that the engine will be running again.
1975 ,150 cavalcade S&D I was station shunter at Darlington and had the pleasure of working with the crew of 60007 .had a go at firing her and of giving ahand to polish her before and after the cavalcade. For me it was the best time of my career when the locos were in the station.
My memories of A4 Sir Nigel Gresley are when it came to Philadelphia works county Durham in the early 70’s even had a footplate ride though a short run. also a trip between Ely and Bishops Stortford.
