A £1.1m project by Network Rail is underway at Orbiston Viaduct on the West Coast Mainline in North Lanarkshire.
The viaduct lies between Uddingston and Motherwell stations and the project involves ‘scour protection' of the structure.
Scour protection is carried out to prevent fast flowing floodwater undermining the foundations of the viaduct.
Repairs are being made to the masonry as well as material being removed the the river bed, with the water being diverted into pipes while the work is carried out.
The viaduct was built in 1849 and carries the railway over South Calder Water. The project is expected to be completed later this year.
Rod Hendry, Construction Manager at Network Rail, said: “Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Network Rail and the £1.1m investment we're making in Orbiston Viaduct will protect it for years to come.
“While scour remains the leading cause of bridge failures in the last 100 years in the UK, the work we're doing is vital to keeping passengers moving safely and reliably over the South Calder Water.
“We are very grateful to all rail users and the wider community for their patience while we carry out this vital work.”
