Tech company ecoATM provides people with a convenient and environmentally friendly method to recycle their old phones.

With approximately 50 million tonnes of unwanted electronic waste, which is also known as e-waste created throughout the world each year, it is surprising to find that only 20% of annual e-waste is being recycled.

ecoATM is a leader in e-waste, battling for the reduction of electronic waste that could be recycled responsibly. The company have managed to save a massive 28 million devices from landfill and have also recycled an impressive 6.9 million lbs of e-waste over the past decade.

Phones that are left with ecoATM are responsibly recycled to give the device a new life, and passengers also get the benefit of helping the environment.

To take part in the scheme and receive a free quote, all passengers need to do is put their device into an ecoATM kiosk at one of the stations taking part.

The ecoATM machine will securely analyse the device and give the passenger an immediate price. If the passenger is happy they can accept the price and the ecoATM will take the phone and provide the funds directly to the passenger's bank.

The tech company has seen massive growth throughout the USA since its launch in 2009 and also throughout Europe since 2018 with 26 kiosks currently in UK cities.

Stations currently with ecoATM kiosks are , , Central, Lower Level and . also has future plans to install more kiosks throughout the network.

Suzanne Grant, Commercial Director at Merseyrail, said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with ecoATM to provide an environmentally responsible and convenient way for our passengers to recycle their old smart devices.

“This is just another part of our commitment to create a cleaner, greener Merseyrail that will assist in reducing emissions across the Liverpool City Region. We're looking forward to working with ecoATM and hope our passengers enjoy this new service on our network.”

Jess O'Dwyer, Country Manager UK & Ireland at ecoATM, said: “In recent years, the issues associated with e-waste have risen significantly and it is now urgent that we examine how to increase the longevity of these products.

“This is why we're delighted to be building a long-lasting partnership with Merseyrail that benefits passengers and helps both the Liverpool City Region and Merseyrail achieve their sustainability goals. Getting paid for doing good is a win-win for everyone.”
