locals have voted in favour of a new footbridge that will link Darnley Road and Moray Place in Strathbungo.

Network Rail worked with the local community to choose the design for the new footbridge which will replace the present bridge which will no longer be usable once the line has been electrified.

Three designs were unveiled to the locals in the form of artists impressions and a vote was opened for residents and business owners so that the choice was made by the community.

With around 5,000 people invited to vote a clear winner was choice A which took 85% of the vote. The new bridge is a curved bespoke design that took inspiration from the current bridge and features a high metal rail on top with a toughened glass barrier which gives a solid but open appearance.

Part of the East Kilbride Enhancements Project which is the focal point of the Scottish Governments Rail Services Decarbonisation Action Plan, the new footbridge will be part of their aim to hit capacity needs on the line and also meet the requirements to provide passengers with less noisy, greener electric trains.

The new footbridge will keep people safe from the overhead electric lines which power the trains.

The current bridge is looking to be relocated by Network Rail, and their asset team are in the process of seeing if heritage railways would be interested in re-homing the footbridge.

The installation of the new footbridge is expected to happen during the summer of 2022 subject to necessary permissions being gained for the work to go ahead.

Donald Stevenson, senior programme manager for the East Kilbride enhancements project, said: “We are delighted that this initiative received such a positive response and we would like to thank the local community for taking part.

“While we appreciate there will be some sadness when the footbridge is replaced, we are really pleased that the community has taken the opportunity to be involved in choosing a new bridge design that both compliments the local surroundings and meets the safety requirements for electrification.”
